Since starting my job with the <a href="http://www.ciyd.org/">Church of Ireland Youth Department</a> just over a year ago, I have made a most rewarding discovery - <a href="http://www.erdinger.com/">Erdinger</a> beer. I have never been overly excited about beer itself (<span style="font-style: italic;">it is an acquired taste</span>), but since I've happened upon <a href="http://www.erdinger.com/">Erdinger</a> I now have a preferred beer. It's brilliant! If you have the occasional drink (<span style="font-style: italic;">and are of age and responsible!</span>) . . try it. If you are a non-drinker, you may avoid it altogether or they now brew <a href="http://www.erdinger-alkoholfrei.com/">Erdinger non-alcoholic</a> (most things are worth trying once!).</p> </div>Williamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07074390022979120168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237690696637708187.post-6226337744999099232024-03-01T15:50:00.001-08:002024-03-01T16:17:00.675-08:00Make shift Drive-In Theatre <div class="post-body" style=""> <p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6559/972/1600/DSCF0085.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6559/972/200/DSCF0085.jpg" alt="" border="0"></a>

I had it on my mind for months. I wanted to fully take advantage of the summer months here in Ireland and do something the local young people would enjoy . . a make shift drive-in theatre. I had to wait until the timing was right for weather, holidays (<span style="font-style: italic;">vacations</span>), work schedule and family schedule before I could proceed. I thought I had planned it on a good night (<span style="font-style: italic;">although Christy says otherwise!</span>). The weather had been perfect - sunny, very warm and no gale-force winds.
So in my back garden (<span style="font-style: italic;">yard</span>), I used a bed sheet, some dynamic hiking cord, my laptop, projector and a borrowed portable stereo - it was amazing. The night was clear and starry, the wind was minimal and more importantly - it was dry. I had so much fun! From the printing of the invitations to the set-up . . how great! We showed <a href="http://www.pixar.com/featurefilms/incredibles">The Incredibles</a> (<span style="font-style: italic;">for free of course!</span>) and it was well worth it. I'll defintely do it again, although next time it'll have to be in <a href="http://www.countytipperary.com/">County Tipperary</a>.</p> </div>Williamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07074390022979120168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237690696637708187.post-33889412514476711722024-03-01T15:50:00.000-08:002024-03-01T16:17:15.055-08:00A Friend to Artists <div class="post-body" style=""> <p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6559/972/1600/IMAGE_00008.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6559/972/200/IMAGE_00008.jpg" alt="" border="0"></a>

For the last two years I have had the privilege of getting to know a man called Michael Guido. 'Guido' as he's better known, has been a friend to those in the Arts & Entertainment industry for over 20+ years. He's a pastor of sorts and a spiritual companion. Guido is a pioneer in the 'road pastor' tradition - supporting groups like <a href="http://www.jarsofclay.com/site.html">Jars of Clay</a>, <a href="http://www.dctalk.com/">dc Talk</a>, <a href="http://www.payableondeath.com/new/index.html">POD</a>, <a href="http://www.michaelwsmith.com/">Michael W. Smith</a>, <a href="http://www.switchfoot.com/">Switchfoot</a> and others. He, his wife Celeste and indeed his entire family have given so much for the calling on their lives to support, challenge and encourage artists and their families in their relationship with Christ. Please pray for the Guidos if you're the praying type. Pray for protection, financial support, joy and an overriding sense of God's clear calling on their ministry - <a href="http://www.prministry.com/">PR Ministries</a>. The PR stands for 'Persuing Relationships'.
Every time we speak, Guido challenges me with his intense love for God and his knowledge of the Scriptures. He is a good friend and a great role model in so many ways. I can see that <a href="http://www.dreamtoday.org/">Dreamers of the Day</a>, in many ways, has a similar purpose and vision to <a href="http://www.prministry.com/">PR Ministries</a>. It is part of our calling as an organisation to support those in the Arts & Entertainment industry. I think I can see God slowly directing us along this path. Time will tell! The pictures are from last February when he visited Ireland with his friend <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Mustaine">Dave Mustaine</a>. We had a number of hours together and I look forward to more in the near future!</p> </div>Williamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07074390022979120168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237690696637708187.post-35114157694951723502024-03-01T15:49:00.000-08:002024-03-01T16:17:25.137-08:00Travels across the Emerald Isle <div class="post-body" style=""> <p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6559/972/1600/Where%20is%20Shane%20copy.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6559/972/320/Where%20is%20Shane%20copy.jpg" alt="" border="0"></a>
Hello to anyone who may be reading this! I thought it might be 'schwing' to put Ireland up on the blog show you where my travels take me.
Here's the key: <span style="color: rgb(51, 255, 51); font-weight: bold;">Green</span> house - where we currently live in N. Ireland / <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">Red</span> house - where we hope to move to in Co. Tipperary in January '06 / <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 255, 0);">Yellow</span> asterix - places I'll be making stops for work or play / <span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;">Red</span> line - my route on the way (note: houses not shown to scale).
This weekend (in fact, in 30 minutes!) I'm heading to the town of Portlaoise in Co. Laois (<span style="font-style: italic;">1st asterix</span>) for a get-together with the area Youth Council tonight. Tomorrow morning <a href="http://www.ciyd.org/">CIYD</a> is hosting a training session for all those who wish to attend <a href="http://www.ciyd.org/news9.html">Anois</a> as a youth leader. Later tomorrow night I'll be delivering a training session in Fermoy, Co. Cork (<span style="font-style: italic;">2nd asterix) </span>for a group of leaders who are planning on running the<a href="http://www.imagexmedia.com/"> Quest</a> course to reach teens in the diocese. I'll leave the Cork area on Sunday morning and make my way home to my wonderful family by Sunday evening. Your prayers are ALWAYS appreciated as I travel, listen and speak to young people, youth leaders and clergy. Time for the road . . .</p> </div>Williamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07074390022979120168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237690696637708187.post-34828220084430371382007-07-21T18:23:00.000-07:002024-03-01T17:55:59.933-08:00Away we go! <div class="post-body" style=""> <p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20070714223335/https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3zeuAJslPgqUJENdqKKxK8Rp3UrkBk1ryDsFo_uc_aj1o7DREcm1dEMkoQ9PeDxlzO0SdISHM-9geG-beqvOz-DPSSIqOLdQ9r6yq9CRBYAesj3n_y06y2n9CentWwED8nCH-xFyxTzk/s1600-h/DSC00733.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://web.archive.org/web/20070714223335im_/https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3zeuAJslPgqUJENdqKKxK8Rp3UrkBk1ryDsFo_uc_aj1o7DREcm1dEMkoQ9PeDxlzO0SdISHM-9geG-beqvOz-DPSSIqOLdQ9r6yq9CRBYAesj3n_y06y2n9CentWwED8nCH-xFyxTzk/s400/DSC00733.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083972834664881314" border="0"></a>

Here are a few images from <a href="http://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/">Magdalen College</a>, Oxford where <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.s._lewis">C.S. Lewis</a> taught as a fellow for a greater share of his life. The first few images are of the church on site of the college - it was ornate and very beautiful - complete with a scene of Christ's triumphant return in the sepia window. The sticky note is just one prayer among many that was left on a bulletin board inside the door. The last three images are of the New Buildings where Lewis taught, the deer park behind it and finally Addison's Walk along the river - where the now famous discussion between <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.s._lewis">C.S.Lewis</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J.R.R._Tolkien">J.R.R. Well, one of my favourite places we visited in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford">Oxford</a> was The Eagle and Child pub - the place where the Inklings met for 23 years to enjoy one another's company, read and critique one another's works and drink beer. The Inklings included a number of notable people as shown in the sign above including <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.s._lewis">C.S. Lewis</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J.r.r._tolkien">J.R.R. Tolkien</a>. The ripples of their friendship and collaborative endeavours are still running across the surface of the cultural pond worldwide. Those only familiar with Lewis and his works believe him to be English as he spent the majority of his life in England. Those more intimate with his story will understand his origin to be Irish - Belfast in fact - where he often loved to visit and roam the <a href="http://www.geographia.com/northern-ireland/ukidwn00.htm">County Down</a> landscape. The privilege has been mine to work in the house his clergyman grandfather once inhabited and in which he played as a child at <a href="http://dundela.down.anglican.org/">St. Mark's, Dundela, Belfast</a>. I blogged about the interesting lion head door handle at the rectory over a year ago <a href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/2006/01/narnia-comes-to-life.html">here</a>. Tolkien on the other hand is not wrongly known for being English through and through. His most popular work - <a href="http://www.tolkien.co.uk/">The Lord of the Rings</a> - is currently my imaginative escape and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'd love to see something akin to the Inklings develop here in Ireland, maybe we can call it <a href="http://www.dreamtoday.org/events_artistscircle_hearttoart.htm">The Artist's Cirlce</a>. Maybe yet we'll see the face of civilization significantly changed again by a gathering of like-hearted, intentional Christ-followers . . .</p><p class="blogger-labels">Labels: <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/C.S.%20Lewis">C.S. America to me is a lot like that older brother who is into some shady dealings, likes to rough you up at times when he's in a bad mood, would fight for you if someone threatened your safety and whom you love deeply.
Happy Birthday to my land of origin on this day <span style="font-style: italic;">(10 minutes past)</span>. Tomorrow marks ten years that I have been married to my best friend and life-long lover. Christy is truly a gift to me. We met when we were 16 while still in high school and dated for five years before marrying. We grew up in central Ohio, studied in Indiana (married while in college), headed to Chicago to begin our 'adult' lives together and in little over a year after that we moved to Ireland. We have lived here now for 8 years in three different homes (and two countries - N.I. /R.O.I.). We have made so many friends together over the years and experienced so many things in our 31 years of life - most importantly bringing two new lives into this world - Neve (4) and Aidan (almost 2). It's amazing to think that by next year - at the age of 32 - we'll have been together for half of our lives!
My wife truly is an amazing woman, mother, friend, lover and companion. She has capable hands when it comes to making a dream reality, she is full of laughter and song, she is of a beauty set apart from others, she's encouraging, daring and a fellow dreamer . . .
I am humbled to have you, to hold and support you Christy - my wife of ten years!
<span style="font-style: italic;">MY LOVE FOR YOU GROWS
<span style="font-style: italic;">Happy Anniversary Baby!

It was our annual Diocesan Youth Officers symposium which enables many of us in youth ministry throughout Ireland to relax, strategize and catch up with one another. We stayed in the beautiful house and grounds of <a href="http://www.stantonhouse.org.uk/">Stanton House</a> while there (a Christian retreat centre of sorts).
Our time was guided by significant inputs from one, Mr. <a href="http://markjberry.blogs.com/way_out_west/">Mark Berry</a> (Abbott of <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/markjohnberry/safe-space/index.html">Safe Space</a> in Telford, England). Mark's contribution was invaluable and so inspirational. He led us through issues around the emerging church / fresh expressions / missional communites, borrowing heavily from his own experience within his own community in Telford. Here are the <a href="http://markjberry.blogs.com/way_out_west/2007/05/exiles_exodus_a.html">notes</a> in of the sessions in PDF from his blog. The three areas we considered were <span style="font-style: italic;">Exiles, Exodus</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Entrepreneurs</span> - fantastic! Get the notes and have a read through them.
We were also able to spend an afternoon in Oxford which was unforgettable. In the next few posts I will upload photos from our trip with little explanations. All of the photos were taken with my phone camera but are fairly good. Enjoy . . . I did!
Below are a few random shots of <a href="http://www.stantonhouse.org.uk/">Stanton House</a> and the grounds around it.

A friend and mentor (of sorts) has written a bit on what the Celtic Christian influence can offer to the emerging church /fresh expression conversation/exploration today. He is Rev. Ray Simpson, the Guardian of the <a href="http://www.aidanandhilda.org/public_html/web/home_main.php">Community of Aidan & Hilda</a>, based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindisfarne">Lindisfarne</a> (Holy Island) in Northumbria, England. There is a page on his community's website that gives a very cursory look into this, listing some of those aforementioned influences as:
</p><ul class="celticlist1"><li>Daily corporate prayer</li><li>Eating places - e.g. cafes</li><li>Accommodation units - e.g. hostel, B and B, on site units for members</li><li>Learning courses - resource centre</li><li>Work and creative arts projects</li><li>Sacred space</li><li>Mentors and counsellors</li><li>Allotments, gardens or another earth-friendly link</li><li>Facilities for all or most ages</li><li>Social entertainment</li></ul>
You can read more on it <a href="http://www.aidanandhilda.org/public_html/web/emerging-church_features.php">here</a>.
If you'd like to go even deeper, check out Ray's book <a href="http://www.aidanandhilda.org/public_html/web/emerging-church_main.php"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Church of the Isles</span></span></a> (scroll down)
So, for those of you engaging in this conversation, how can you see Ray's suggestions as being/becoming formative influences in the EM conversation/practice? Are they there already? Thoughts?<p class="blogger-labels">Labels: <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Aidan">Aidan</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/celtic%20christianity">celtic christianity</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/community">community</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/conversation">conversation</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/emerging%20church">emerging church</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/fresh%20expressions">fresh expressions</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Hilda">Hilda</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/lindisfarne">lindisfarne</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/rev.%20ray%20simpson">rev. ray simpson</a></p><p></p> </div>Williamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07074390022979120168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237690696637708187.post-39610148111095574102007-06-22T19:26:00.000-07:002024-03-01T18:26:51.598-08:00Dublin Zoo and Small Smiles<div class="post-body" style=""> <p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHLl0JY9T5uwlvypiaLpHnRvd-EfM3xC_p74HMK8EEqS0Idy4QlUmjPLxkE8HleoBOZJc4ZXt47GE4TYf92FCPZtoZyPZBHNNsAHj_tVmzLg1kWpamD_5bld1OSeP3YJQkVwXjkoJY1-8/s1600-h/DSC00142.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHLl0JY9T5uwlvypiaLpHnRvd-EfM3xC_p74HMK8EEqS0Idy4QlUmjPLxkE8HleoBOZJc4ZXt47GE4TYf92FCPZtoZyPZBHNNsAHj_tVmzLg1kWpamD_5bld1OSeP3YJQkVwXjkoJY1-8/s200/DSC00142.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071985721132899314" border="0"></a>
Two months ago the family and I traveled to <a href="http://www.dublinzoo.ie/">Dublin Zoo</a>. It had been something I wanted to take the kids to for over a year. The day was slightly overcast but dry, and the trip was well worth it. Neve and Aidan thoroughly enjoyed taking in all of the sights, smells <span style="font-style: italic;">(maybe not so</span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlsXrcvv3KxWGUd4COCmP98W2XdUk-cBBnzcRKb3KKVAM85nRXoAyNJ71OJG_K1Qg2QhaZM3ZkVAADPCw8kLldafMS_zGMlCVlyF1stZPtqNZIaalLOQGy13tsyASC8SItHXBqdHoru68/s1600-h/DSC00151.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlsXrcvv3KxWGUd4COCmP98W2XdUk-cBBnzcRKb3KKVAM85nRXoAyNJ71OJG_K1Qg2QhaZM3ZkVAADPCw8kLldafMS_zGMlCVlyF1stZPtqNZIaalLOQGy13tsyASC8SItHXBqdHoru68/s200/DSC00151.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071985721132899330" border="0"></a><span style="font-style: italic;"> much)</span> enthralling to see the wide-eyed and sounds of the zoo. It was so wonder and smiles on the kids faces. The animals that were memorable for me were the tiger <span style="font-style: italic;">(they</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> were just</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span><span style="font-style: italic;">opposite the kids at</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> ey</span><span style="font-style: italic;">e level behind thick</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> glass)</span> and the gorillas. There was a massive male gorilla who played tag with all the younger ones. What a laugh to watch!

On a different note, the lion that you see roaring at the beginning of MGM films was from the Dublin zoo. See below.

It illustrates well that humans work best in the context of community with a shared vision. It's unified diversity. More and more I have a growing desire to be a part of an intentional, creative, committed community of like-hearted (not like-minded) individuals working collaboratively on projects of eternal significance. What about you?

"Not only do pastors need to be faithful, Blackaby says more need to devote more time to spiritual matters. Noting that 'you can’t give people what you don’t have,' he said the best way pastors can lead people into a growing, dynamic walk with God is to have their own. </p><p style="font-style: italic;">'Too many pastors get into the pulpit expecting people to do things they haven’t done themselves,' he said. About two months ago I had the privilege of visiting an ancient Irish monastic site in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lough_Erne">Lough (Lock) Erne</a> called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devenish_Island">Devenish Island</a>. It's a place I had long known about but I just never had the right opportunity to visit it. When I was speaking on a youth weekend in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enniskillen">Enniskillen</a> I took some time out to finally make a visit. It was well worth it.
The Irish, even though living on an island, have long had a love<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmy3ffjRPfkMgjU0OG_1iyuJiTdmfVMhMK3-3ajItgMoOMsqYtwxO2kW4NR3xG7IMersSeADDcy8RHQy70zXLqMpoWzmUFJxpkRbrUqwyWBaSBOdfd8zKMuhi6gthKgXP22XTTUqJ4Zk8/s1600-h/DSC00073.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmy3ffjRPfkMgjU0OG_1iyuJiTdmfVMhMK3-3ajItgMoOMsqYtwxO2kW4NR3xG7IMersSeADDcy8RHQy70zXLqMpoWzmUFJxpkRbrUqwyWBaSBOdfd8zKMuhi6gthKgXP22XTTUqJ4Zk8/s200/DSC00073.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071616491384396642" border="0"></a> for situating themselves on smaller islands within and around the country. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devenish_Island">Devenish</a> is no exception. It was established as a monastic community not far from the current town of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enniskillen">Enniskillen</a>, Co. Fermanagh in the 6th century by <a href="http://www.cassidyclan.org/devinish.htm">St.</a><a href="http://www.cassidyclan.org/devinish.htm"> Molaise</a> and is now a tourist attraction with the occasional pilgrim paying a visit.
This ancient site truly would have been of prime importance in its heyday being located on what would have been the highway of<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq3WDm4M9ivnVMw2c1yJP6849OnIFULTGympiqhypxA0wOqe8I0YNEzg1AflS10gdlnTnBASFdsKIsTAVubB9yNMoPDT9KCmOI5T0xA-HwNXbGgcbcAck4IA1NavF7JUcAPumwiv2wbwk/s1600-h/DSC00078.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq3WDm4M9ivnVMw2c1yJP6849OnIFULTGympiqhypxA0wOqe8I0YNEzg1AflS10gdlnTnBASFdsKIsTAVubB9yNMoPDT9KCmOI5T0xA-HwNXbGgcbcAck4IA1NavF7JUcAPumwiv2wbwk/s200/DSC00078.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071616504269298578" border="0"></a> the day - along the route of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Shannon">Shannon river</a> running through nearly 3/4 of Ireland. I'll post a few highlights of images I shot with my mobile/cell phone camera. You'll get a feel for the place through them.
One of the most significant aspects of my trip was coming across a phrase which stood out to me immediately. As I was reading the information boards in the visitors' centre I saw the phrase '<a href="http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04563b.htm">Ceile De</a>' mentioned in a write up about an very ancient order of monks which had a presence on Devenish at one time. The name<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFOo1pYFtEUrNpAA9vRliMxXOmi5bgNIqZCHeRwMx2kDulArFxfhDJAsCv5taws-CyV6A_P1pY9p855wGa1QwB92BkMxIu0950jaZCWXqVz4mRdIZAbH7sDtTpb6oHlHn0kbnd4RC7mjY/s1600-h/DSC00087.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFOo1pYFtEUrNpAA9vRliMxXOmi5bgNIqZCHeRwMx2kDulArFxfhDJAsCv5taws-CyV6A_P1pY9p855wGa1QwB92BkMxIu0950jaZCWXqVz4mRdIZAbH7sDtTpb6oHlHn0kbnd4RC7mjY/s200/DSC00087.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071616499974331266" border="0"></a> can be translated, <span style="font-style: italic;">'spouses of God', 'companions of God',</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> 'partners of God' or the</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> 'gathering of God'</span>. There is some debate about just who these '<a href="http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04563b.htm">Ceile</a><a href="http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04563b.htm"> De</a>' were - or the Anglicized '<a href="http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04563b.htm">Culdee</a>' - but one thing remains . . they were passionate about God. In September my friend and rector, Stephen Neill, and I are preparing to launch an alternate community of disenfranchised spectators of the Christian way in Cloughjordan. We are tentatively considering calling it '<a href="http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04563b.htm">Ceile De</a>' as an apt descriptor of our hopes for those who become a part of this journey.

Offaly. I stopped at the site of the monastery where he trained and had returned to before dying. It was an interesting stop because I have passed the location of the ancient monastery now called Clonenagh more times than I remember.
It's a strange thing to feel as if your life's journey is being carried along on a breath of wind and a ray of sunlight. What do the days ahead hold in store . . .</p><p class="blogger-labels">Labels: <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Ceile%20Dei">Ceile Dei</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Clonenagh">Clonenagh</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Cloughjordan">Cloughjordan</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Culdee">Culdee</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Devenish%20island">Devenish island</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/emerging%20church">emerging church</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/fresh%20expressions">fresh expressions</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/St.%20Aengus">St. Aengus</a></p><p></p> </div>Williamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07074390022979120168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237690696637708187.post-72581390743362940082007-06-03T19:26:00.000-07:002024-03-01T18:26:21.551-08:00be<div class="post-body" style=""> <p><span style="font-family:georgia;">I spent about five hours on the top of the Slieve Bloom mountains </span><span style="font-style: italic;font-family:georgia;">(centre of Ireland) </span><span style="font-family:georgia;">about six weeks ago. Ahh, finally an expression of Christianity which I'm at home in. Seriously, I have traversed many a tradition within the Christian Church in my life <span style="font-style: italic;">(Methodist, Nazarene, Lutheran/Charasmatic, Mennonite, Non-denom., Presbyterian, Anglican and a good shoulder rub with Catholicism),</span> but for all it's lifelessness at times, the Church of Ireland has felt the most like home. It's a strange animal, occupying the 'Via Media' in Christian expression, and I feel a sense of affinity for it. I'm sure much of it has to do with the process of maturation in my life<span style="font-style: italic;"> (some could say it's another phase)</span>, but I do love this Church. It is part of a larger body within the <a href="http://www.anglicancommunion.org/">Anglican Communion</a> which is 70 million strong and which has so much diversity. From lethargic to charismatic, liturgical to 'dance revolution', reflective to shouts of praise - it's beautiful. Given, there are bound to be heresies as well <span style="font-style: italic;">(and there are in my humble opinion</span>), but that is no reason to 'jump ship' - rather, a 'truth in love' engagement is required. I am also quite partial to the early Irish<span style="font-style: italic;"> (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Christianity">Celtic</a>) </span>roots from which this church springs. The older I become the more I sense that there is <span style="font-style: italic;">salvation</span> in tension, in the area between extremes known as balance <span style="font-style: italic;">(which, coincidentally is so elusive)</span>. God has big plans yet for His Church in this little island on the edge of the world . . .
<span style="font-weight: bold;">May we all know our deep, deep hunger for Him who is Life to the full!</span>

I have been silent. Not necessarily because of my desire to be, but more due to my hectic schedule in recent weeks. Traveling has been average around the island <span style="font-style: italic;">(Mayo, Dublin, Kilkenny and Belfast)</span> but other aspects of life and work have kept me at full tilt.
I am very happy to announce that after two years of investing in my course at Manresa for a diploma in Spiritual Direction - I am finished! Last weekend marked the final requirement for the course and I am elated! It was a fantastic course - very well crafted, paced and balanced -<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_UYjy5ada_6wRhY2PjwQ04zx_rnr-jxLa1VfaVtHMfJhEqJFx27a7yAG8e1dejvYwBX6XkFRw9xNXdL3qdHRQMeCg-wPu_rQZxrWXIaRcA3HScIUqQgUT5mctEWAH3J8_8v3aj7JqzYE/s1600-h/DSC00008.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_UYjy5ada_6wRhY2PjwQ04zx_rnr-jxLa1VfaVtHMfJhEqJFx27a7yAG8e1dejvYwBX6XkFRw9xNXdL3qdHRQMeCg-wPu_rQZxrWXIaRcA3HScIUqQgUT5mctEWAH3J8_8v3aj7JqzYE/s320/DSC00008.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5064181065316070818" border="0"></a> with a generous and open spirit to outsiders (non-Catholic in background). My sole prayer to be challenged was answered . . it was! I made a number of new friends, many times 30 years older than me. I have been stretched and opened to understanding the riches and complexities that make up the Catholic Church and the human soul. I look forward to seeing what doors God may open to utilise this training and experience in the days ahead. Our graduation is in October.
I was able to deliver a morning breakfast session on the Emerging Church / Fresh Expressions phenomenon at the General Synod of the Church<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjymPd4g-UzGt1gayK89w2riwst_Stkbz79VnJzDaCDh-RYdp6Gqm0WRQN9uEEOlKFFYmyve8-C4F9PKsj-uZu7jzsZkJF-mNw-sq3GN3PB7HCqlM1FIRGBh8AoJPQSEZzNpOxb7vG98QU/s1600-h/DSC00017.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjymPd4g-UzGt1gayK89w2riwst_Stkbz79VnJzDaCDh-RYdp6Gqm0WRQN9uEEOlKFFYmyve8-C4F9PKsj-uZu7jzsZkJF-mNw-sq3GN3PB7HCqlM1FIRGBh8AoJPQSEZzNpOxb7vG98QU/s320/DSC00017.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5064181761100772802" border="0"></a> of Ireland this past week in Kilkenny. It was a great opportunity and was fairly well attended. I was pleased to have my old friend Brian Ross over with me to give a snap shot of this topic from a North American perspective. More on this in the week ahead.
We finally launched MOBILISE in the Youth Department. It's a nation-wide initiative to meet the felt and perceived needs related to youth ministry across Ireland. We <span style="font-style: italic;">(the youth dept.) </span>are rolling it out with six topical, inter-active workshops this year and an additional six to follow next year. More on this in the week ahead.
Christy is plowing ahead with getting a full-fledged Sunday School <span style="font-style: italic;">(for lack of a better phrase)</span> off the ground in our parish. Today was one of the Sundays she and the rest of the team pulled together to deliver. It went very well. Small numbers . . but what can be expected from a village of 500+ people?!! I'm proud of her for the vision, persistence and passion she's poured into the kids in our church!
Neve and Aidan are brilliant!!! I cannot say enough about my kids. They enthrall me, enthuse me, enrich me and wear me out. Neve carries out such intelligent conversations for a little girl of nearly four and Aidan is such a boy - wrecking things, growling and running. He's a lover though <span style="font-style: italic;">(like his daddy!) </span>;-) - and he enjoys a good cuddle now and then. And Abby - how could I forget the dog who has been the epitome of faithfulness??? She sits in our back garden day after day and never really complains. Neither does she complain when what little attention she gets is from the kids pulling her tail or laying on her back. She loves to snuggle in closer and sit on your feet when we let her. Fantastic friend!
Well, that's about it for tonight. A little more personal post before I slide back into the brief soul snap-shots that I usually post begin again. I hope this finds each one of you well and in a state of perpetual wonder at God's love and goodness . . and the beauty of life!</p><p class="blogger-labels">Labels: <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/absence">absence</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/catch%20up">catch up</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/family">family</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/personal">personal</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/silence">silence</a></p><p></p> </div>Williamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07074390022979120168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237690696637708187.post-62990045422219653212007-05-17T19:28:00.000-07:002024-03-01T18:28:57.249-08:00Running the Numbers<div class="post-body" style=""> <p><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOMBO2QkLGAUARWz_k76a0dpTds1Uvyb_iCsWGZsevtOtErefHrPZXNXIGJjAT0vKRQo1sSCLNF4Wzbyx51xpQu4gfbXlTf0hrX-xpaI8oc2WJ8yEEwgj_juDgLf1PvI4pL5BBNEBkLm8/s1600-h/Chris+Jordan+mobiles.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOMBO2QkLGAUARWz_k76a0dpTds1Uvyb_iCsWGZsevtOtErefHrPZXNXIGJjAT0vKRQo1sSCLNF4Wzbyx51xpQu4gfbXlTf0hrX-xpaI8oc2WJ8yEEwgj_juDgLf1PvI4pL5BBNEBkLm8/s400/Chris+Jordan+mobiles.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065149408802954002" border="0"></a>
I was very intrigued and very disturbed by this exhibition by <a href="http://www.chrisjordan.com/">Chris Jordan</a>. I applaud him for his work on this project which begs me to ask the question, <span style="font-style: italic;">"Is there anything I/we can do?!" </span>or more appropriately, <span style="font-style: italic;">"What MUST I/we do about this <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">irresponsible</span> behaviour?!"
<span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">What are you doing about it?</span>

If you're a Christian, let's not waste time trying to build the case by 'running the verses' on stewardship, creation and ethical responsibility - we shouldn't have to do that. It's all there. Know your Bible . . but more importantly, know your God.
DO WHAT YOU CAN.

This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs.” </p> <p style="font-style: italic;"> </p> <p style="font-style: italic;">“My hope is that images representing these huge quantities in “Running The Numbers” might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. This video really drew me in. Aesthetically and lyrically it provides the framework for an engaging narrative. Regardless of whether you appreciate the style, what did you 'take home' after viewing it? What was the message laiden within this video from Thrice as you see it?</p><p class="blogger-labels">Labels: <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/arts">arts</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/comment">comment</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/critcal%20thought">critcal thought</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Image%20of%20the%20Invisible">Image of the Invisible</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/musicians">musicians</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/Thrice">Thrice</a>, <a rel="tag" href="http://wwwdreamtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/video">video</a></p><p></p> </div>Williamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07074390022979120168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1237690696637708187.post-64991498894794996112007-05-06T19:27:00.000-07:002024-03-01T18:27:40.902-08:00"What I've Done" - Linkin Park<div class="post-body" style=""> <p><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/paIf4DBM6QI"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://web.archive.org/web/20070714223335oe_/http://www.youtube.com/v/paIf4DBM6QI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></object>

Well, if the world isn't getting stranger! This is the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=11806897&postID=115400540760988138">second</a> time our little place on the map has been on the world stage in the past year! <a href="http://www.cbs.com/">CBS</a> just aired their television coverage of the breaking story of two weeks ago that Democratic presidential candidate <a href="http://www.barackobama.com/">Barak Obama</a> had a great, great, great grandfather from Moneygall <span style="font-style: italic;">(translated 'field of the foreigner')</span>, Co. Offaly, Ireland who was a member of the <a href="http://www.ireland.anglican.org/">Church of Ireland</a>. <a href="http://www.daft.ie/offaly/houses_for_sale/moneygall/">Moneygall</a> is in the same group of parishes that our village <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloughjordan">Cloughjordan</a> is in and therefore, my friend and rector - <a href="http://paddyanglican.blogspot.com/">Stephen Neill</a> - has responsibility for that area too. I wasn't at church the day CBS came through due to the final weekend of my course in <a href="http://www.manresa.ie/workshops.html">Spiritual Direction</a>, but Christy and the kids were. I think Stephen told me he had done 30+ interviews, 7 radio shows and the television piece for CBS when it was all said and done. Isn't the world hungry for information! You can read the story and watch the video from the link below.
